| What is a “must” in Rome, apart from the usual tours? The embarrassment of the choice is really vast, but for sure Villa Borghese in itself is worth a trip to Italy. The Borghese Gallery, renowned for centuries as “the sovereign of all private art collections” is nowadays open to anyone interested in a more than superficial approach to Rome’s treasures and delights (without the usual crowds and endless waiting in line). Our tour starts by going through the Gallery, with an expert and brilliant guide which is imperative to fully en- joy the masterpieces that the Borghese Family (Pope Paul V was issued from it) have amassed in its tasteful summer residence since 1600. Bernini as a sculptor, Raphael, Caravaggio, Tiziano, Domenichino, Correggio, Giorgione are just some of the highlights in an incredible array ran- ging from ancient Rome up to the Neo-classical style, the latter epitomized by Canova’s famous nude of Paolina Bonaparte. The second part of the guided tour will be outdoors, by bus and on foot, throught the delightful Borghese Park, the Pincio Terrazza with its breath-taking view, the panoramic Pincio promenade and the Spanish Steps from the top. The final point will be Piazza di Spagna, the heart of a paradise for fashion conscious win- dow-shoppers and selective gour- mets. This central point is easly con- nected with most of the hotels or at walking distance. Our guide will be at disposal for directions or advice required. |
A fascinating concentration of artistic and historical wonders as offered by Capitol Hills is certainly unique. Just the Capitoline museums would be worth a trip to Italy, not only for their contents but also for their majestic halls richly decorated by illustrios Renaissance and Baroque masters. The rich amount of masterpieces exhibited there comes from Ancient Rome and Greece, such as the bronze Capitoline-She-Wolf, the colossal Costantine head, the Marcus Aurelius in bronze, the Dying Gaul and the Capitoline Venus, but covers as well the successive centuries in a glorious way: for istance, the head of Medusa represents Bernini at his best. A visit of the Picture Gallery will delight the visitor by its famous Caravaggios, Tizianos etc. Our tour includes the Square, the Palazzo dei Conservatori, with courtesy refreshments at the aristocratics setting of the panoramic Terrazza Caffarelli, the Palazzo Nuovo, the Senatorial Palace with breath-taking views of the Roman Forum and Paqlatine Hill. Then it will continue at the Shrine of Fatherland: the "Vittoriano" (the top is directly reached from Capitol Square through our "secret" passage), with its multiple views of the Imperial Fora and of the whole City it will end at Trajan's Column, the best preserved and may be most interesting monument from Ancient Rome.
